Gilbert Veliz, born on February 11, 1937, in the quaint town of Bisbee, Arizona, has left an indelible mark through his multifaceted career and his compelling work, “The Flight of the Deer.” Situated near the Mexican border, Bisbee played a pivotal role in shaping Veliz’s understanding of the intricate ties between cultures and nations. Veliz embarked on an illustrious legal journey, earning his law degree from the esteemed University of Arizona Law School in 1961. His commitment to justice led him to serve as a deputy county attorney in Santa Cruz County in Nogales, where he began his legal career. Subsequently, he dedicated his expertise as a legal aid lawyer and a crucial member of the original Pima County Public Defender’s Office in Tucson.
In 1991, Veliz took a pivotal step in his career by joining the newly established Federal Public Defender’s office in Tucson, contributing significantly to the legal landscape. His unwavering dedication to justice was further highlighted when he assumed the role of Chief Magistrate for the City of Tucson. In 1976, Governor Raul Castro recognized his legal acumen by appointing him to the Superior Court, where he served with distinction until his well-deserved retirement. Beyond the courtroom, Gilbert Veliz was an active participant in Arizona’s legal community, engaging in various civic organizations that mirrored his commitment to societal welfare. His profound impact extended to his personal life, where he found joy in the embrace of his beloved family. Together with his wife Bertha, Gilbert raised five children, and their family circle expanded to include ten cherished grandchildren, all of whom reside in Tucson.
